A tolvajt a DNS-mintái alapján azonosították és elfogták, de a festmény addigra már nem volt nála.

Az akciót az Ultima Generazione környezetvédő mozgalom négy aktivistája hajtotta végre.

Környezetvédő aktivisták paradicsomlevessel öntötték le Vincent van Gogh egyik leghíresebb festményét pénteken Londonban. Az incidens a brit főváros világhírű képzőművészeti gyűjteményében, a Trafalgar téren lévő Nemzeti Galériában történt.
A Just Stop Oil nevű környezetvédő csoport pólóját viselő két fiatal nő konzerv-paradicsomlevest zúdított a Napraforgók című alkotásra, majd tenyerüket mindketten a falhoz ragasztották, és egyikük azt kiabálta:
Mi ér többet? A művészet vagy az élet? Jobban aggasztja magukat egy festmény védelme, mint az emberéleté vagy a bolygónké?
Az immár üres konzervdobozt felmutatva az aktivista – akit a rendőrség később Phoebe Plummer néven azonosított – kijelentette, hogy a mostani megélhetési válság közepette több millió éhező család még egy leveskonzervet sem tud megmelegíteni.
A két aktivistát a rendőrség péntek délután őrizetbe vette szándékos károkozás vádjával. A termet, ahol a festmény látható, a biztonsági szolgálat lezárta.
A londoni Nemzeti Galéria tájékoztatása szerint az 1888-ban készült – a holland festőművész által több változatban megfestett –Napraforgók eszmei értéke 72,5 millió font (több mint 36 milliárd forint).
A Just Stop Oil két hete tart folyamatos demonstrációkat Londonban, az ellen tiltakozva, hogy a brit kormány az energiaellátási kockázatok csökkentése végett új nyersolaj-kitermelési engedélyek kiadását tervezi.

A holland mester Tavaszi kert című képét hétfőre virradóra vitték el betörők az Amszterdamtól keletre fekvő Singer Laren múzeumból. A festményt egy kiállításra kapta kölcsön az intézmény az ugyancsak hollandiai, groningeni múzeumtól, becsült értéke egyelőre nem ismert.
„Dühösek, döbbentek és szomorúak vagyunk” – mondta Evert van Os, a William és Anna Singer amerikai házaspár gyűjteményét őrző múzeum igazgatója.
A múzeum saját kollekciója főleg modernista, így neoimpresszionista, pointillista, expresszionista és kubista festők műveiből áll. A bezárás előtt azonban épp időszaki kiállítást rendeztek az amszterdami Rijksmuseummal együttműködésben.
