Az Airbus A321-es gép helyi idő szerint csütörtökön, nem sokkal dél előtt indult el a Csedzsu-szigetről a Tegui reptérre, ahova egy órával később meg is érkezett, a landolás azonban a vártnál rázósabbra sikerült, miután a vészkijárat mellett ülő férfi még a levegőben, nagyjából 200 méterrel a föld felett kinyitotta a mellette lévő ajtót, ami a landolásig úgy is maradt. Ez, illetve maga az incidens egyébként azért történhetett meg, mert a landolásra készülve nemcsak az utasok, hanem már az utaskísérők is az ülésbe szíjazva ültek a gépen.
A leszállás során végül senki nem sérült meg, de kilenc embert, köztük nyolc iskolás gyereket kórházba kellett szállítani hiperventilláció gyanúja miatt. A gépen egyébként összesen 48 kisiskolás volt, egyikük anyjának elmondása szerint őket, különösen azokat, akik közelebb ültek az ajtóhoz, eléggé megrémisztette a dolog. Az esetről több videó is készült, ezeken látszik, hogy a szél alaposan megdolgozta az utasokat.
Az őrizetbe vétele után a hatóságok megpróbálták kihúzni az egyedül utazó, 33 éves férfiből, hogy mi késztette arra, hogy kinyissa az ajtót, de egyelőre nem tudtak kihúzni belőle semmit. Az mindenesetre biztosnak tűnik, hogy nem állt semmilyen szer befolyása alatt.
