Lángok borították el hétfőn késő este Zágráb egyik legismertebb városképformáló épületét, a Vjesnik-tornyot. A horvát közszolgálati televízió beszámolója szerint a tűzoltók egész éjjel küzdöttek a lángokkal, és az első becslések alapján a teljes oltás akár egész nap is eltarthat.
Tomislav Tomasevic polgármester hajnalban személyesen is felkereste a helyszínt. Közölte: senki sem sérült meg, és a környéken élők sincsenek veszélyben. Mint mondta, a tűz rendkívül összetett, ráadásul a lángokat eredetileg belülről kellett volna megfékezni, de ez túl kockázatosnak bizonyult. „A kár gyakorlatilag teljes” – fogalmazott, ugyanakkor reményét fejezte ki, hogy az állam és a többi tulajdonos mielőbb megkezdheti az ikonikus torony újjáépítését.
A helyzet súlyosságáról Sinisa Jembrih, a zágrábi hivatásos tűzoltóság parancsnoka is beszélt a Horvát Rádióban. Elmondása szerint, amikor a tűzoltók feljutottak a felső szintekre, kiderült, hogy alattuk is ég az épület – ez pedig rendkívül kockázatos helyzetet teremtett.
A parancsnok szerint a valószínűleg több helyen egyszerre felcsapó lángok valamilyen súlyos műszaki meghibásodás vagy elektromos hiba miatt keletkezhettek. A tűzoltóknak ezért vissza kellett vonulniuk, és kívülről folytatják az oltást, ami kevésbé hatékony, de biztonságosabb – mondta.
A Slavonska sugárúton álló Vjesnik-torony egykor a zágrábi és a horvát média központi helyszíne volt. A hetvenes években Európa egyik legmodernebb épületének számított, különleges barnaszínű üvegfalával és az akkor úttörőnek számító „open space” kialakítással, amelyet a New York-i Lever House ihletett. A 67 méter magas, „csokoládétoronynak” becézett épület 1972-ben fogadta első lakóit, és évtizedeken át meghatározó szerepet játszott a horvát sajtó életében.
A valaha modern és ambiciózus torony azonban az elmúlt években szinte szellemépületté vált – a nyomtatott média visszaszorulása és a félresikerült privatizációs folyamatok miatt a komplexum hosszú ideje elhanyagolt állapotba került.

Irena Hrstic egészségügyi miniszter elmondta: az utolsó információk szerint összesen hat áldozat van, egy hétéves kislány már a helyszínen életét vesztette.
A három gyermeket és a két felnőttet több zágrábi kórházban látják el, mindannyian túl vannak az életveszélyen. A két felnőtt közül az egyik az iskola igazgatója, a másik az elkövető ‒ mondta a miniszter. A gyerekek 7 és 11 év közöttiek.
Davor Bozinovic horvát belügyminiszter a sajtónak úgy nyilatkozott: a 19 éves elkövető az iskola diákja volt, és a közelben lakik. A férfi pszichés problémákkal küzd, és korábban öngyilkossági kísérlete is volt. Kiemelte: a támadás nem egy osztályteremben történt, hanem vélhetően a folyosón. Az elkövető ezt követően megpróbált elrejtőzni, és saját magát is megsebesítette több késszúrással. A rendőrség azonban megakadályozta az öngyilkosságot.
„Az esemény körülményeinek és dinamikájának meghatározása folyamatban van” ‒ fogalmazott a miniszter, megjegyezve, hogy a nyomozás és a rendőrség által végzett egyéb intézkedések, mint a tanúk kihallgatása és a térfigyelő kamerák felvételeinek begyűjtése folyamatban van.

Zeljko Remenar tűzoltóparancsnok a helyszínen arról tájékoztatott: kiérkezve nem észleltek tüzet, és nem volt gázszivárgás sem, vélhetően egy robbanószerkezet robbant fel.

A Hajduk Split labdarúgócsapatának több száz szurkolója került összetűzésbe a rendőrséggel Zágráb közelében.
A bajnokság utolsó fordulójában a spliti együttes 3–1-es vereséget szenvedett az aranyérmes Dinamo Zagrebtől. A hazafelé úton a szurkolók egy jelentős csoportja autóival blokkolta az A1-es utópályát a fővárostól mintegy harminc kilométerre az egyik pihenőhelynél. A rendőrség lőfegyvert is használva szüntette meg az elzárást.
Hivatalos forrás szerint tucatnyi rendőr szenvedett sérülést, egyes források arról számoltak be, hogy két szurkolót meglőttek.
Az érintett pályaszakaszt még vasárnap reggel sem lehetett használni – írja az MTI.
