A szélsőjobboldali tüntetők ezt a sátortábort használták bázisként, amikor megrohamoztak kormányzati épületeket, és csaknem négy órán át randalíroztak az elnöki palotában, a kongresszus és a legfelsőbb bíróság épületében.
A január elsején beiktatott régi-új elnök, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva az államok kormányzóival tartott megbeszélést egy nappal azután, hogy a tömeg – a washingtoni Capitolium ostromát idézően – megrohamozta a hatalom központját, káoszt szabadítva a brazil fővárosra.
Hétfőn a nagyvárosokban ezrek álltak ki a demokrácia mellett, és követelték az erőszakot szító Bolsonaro felelősségre vonását.
Egy diáklány arról beszélt, hogy „fáj neki az, hogy büntetlenül megúszhatják azok, aki véget akartak vetni a demokráciának, amiért a brazil nép keményen megküzdött 30 éve. Millióknak kellene kiállniuk ezért!”
Egy másik egyetemista azt mondja, „tart tőle, hogy más dolgok is visszatérhetnek a múltból. De ez nem tántorítja el attól, hogy tovább küzdjön a demokrácia vívmányaiért. Meg kell mutatnunk, hogy múlt árnyai egyszerűen nem térhetnek vissza!”
