Один із адвокатів Дональда Трампа Девід Шон перед судом у четвер сказав наступне: навряд чи юридична група колишнього президента використовуватиме повний час, відведений їй в процесі. Прессекретар Трампа Джейсон Міллер заявив у Twitter, що, як очікується, їхні юристи закінчать свою захисну промову вже в п’ятницю.
Дональд Трамп – перший президент США, проти якого Палата представників двічі проголосувала за порушення справи; у 2019 році його притягнули до відповідальності за зловживання службовим становищем та перешкоджання роботі Конгресу, але тоді Сенат виправдав його.
Швидше за все, розгляд справи закінчиться аналогічно, оскільки для засудження потрібна більшість у дві третини в Сенаті, але співвідношення республіканців до демократів становить 50:50. Таким чином, принаймні 17 республіканців повинні підтримати засудження президента, а під час голосування у вівторок лише шість із них проголосували за конституційність імпічменту проти Трампа.
Якщо Дональда Трампа остаточно засудять, він може втратити свої переваги, а Сенат може провести подальше голосування, щоб він більше ніколи не міг взяти участь у президентських виборах. Для цього не потрібна більшість у дві третини, а лише проста більшість голосів.
