Співробітник поліції Капітолію Браян Сікнік помер після штурму Конгресу США прихильниками колишнього президента Дональда Трампа з природних причин, а не з вини активістів, повідомляє медичне експертне бюро Вашингтона.
Сікнік помер наступного після масових заворушень дня, 6 січня, а звіти, оприлюднені в той час поліцією столиці, свідчать, що протестувальники розпилили на нього хімічні речовини. 42-річний поліцейський зомлів і зрештою втратив життя.
Детальне розслідування, яке тривало місяцями, не підтвердило цього припущення. Однак, як розповів газеті The Washington Post головний медичний експерт столичного округу Франциско Діас, після проведення експертизи не було встановлено, що Сікнік мав алергічну реакцію на подразнювальну речовину. За словами Діаса, фахівці не знайшли і слідів відкритих або закритих травм. Він також повідомив, що смерть співробітника поліції була спричинена не зовнішнім втручанням, а двома інсультами.
Під час розтину тіла поліцейського не було знайдено доказів того, що хімічні речовини спровокували смертельну реакцію, додав експерт. Унаслідок облоги Капітолію загинули п’ятеро людей, однак експерт також зазначив, що події 6 січня «відіграли свою роль у погіршенні стану здоров’я поліцейського».
Діас, посилаючись на вимогу нерозголошення особистої інформації, відмовився пояснити, чи було в співробітника поліції якесь хронічне захворювання. Проте, як зазначає газета, цей висновок експертів ускладнить можливість довести провину в загибелі поліцейського обвинувачених у справі про штурм Конгресу.
Співробітник поліції Капітолію Браян Сікнік брав участь в охороні будівлі й 6 січня разом з іншими правоохоронцями стримував натовп протестувальників. Слідчі раніше хотіли побудувати федеральну справу про вбивство за фактом смерті Сікніка, вивчаючи відео та фотографії і намагаючись визначити, у який момент він зазнав смертельних травм. Спочатку з’явилися повідомлення про те, що поліцейський загинув через удар вогнегасником, але це також не підтвердилося. Повідомляється, що, крім Сікніка, під час заворушень загинули ще чотири людини.
6 січня прихильники республіканця Дональда Трампа, який на той момент був президентом США, увірвалися до будівлі Конгресу, щоб перешкодити затвердженню підсумків президентських виборів, проведених 3 листопада минулого року. Перемогу тоді здобув демократ Джо Байден.
Палата представників демократичної більшості почала процедуру конституційного імпічменту проти колишнього президента через підбурювання людей до повстання, посилаючись на його запальну промову під час мітингу перед Капітолієм.
Урешті-решт в кінці розгляду справи Трамп був виправданий сенатом.
У зв’язку зі смертю Сікніка заарештували двох людей
Минулого місяця за підозрою в нападі на поліцейського Сікніка та розпиленні на нього шкідливої хімічної речовини було заарештовано двох чоловіків. Однак прокурори та судово-медичний експерт не довели зв’язок між смертю правоохоронця та розпиленою речовиною. Відтак 32-річний Джуліан Елі Хатер та 39-річний Джордж П’єр Таніос більше не звинувачуються в смерті поліцейського, але проти них усе ще триває слідство за іншими звинуваченнями (наприклад, у нападі на федерального чиновника, фізичному насильстві та перешкоджанні розслідуванню).
До речі, на сьогодні за фактом штурму Капітолію було порушено понад 400 кримінальних справ.
Видання The New York Times також підготувало звіт про цю справу
У лютневому звіті американської газети The New York Times з посиланням на інформацію правоохоронних органів ішлося, що Сікніка вбили, ударивши вогнегасником, але згодом цю статтю редагували. Пізніше поліція Капітолію повідомила, що їхній колега загинув, захищаючи будівлю, бо зазнав тілесних ушкоджень.
Після публікації звіту судово-медичної експертизи поліція Капітолію видала повідомлення, у якому наголошувалося: вони приймають висновки медичного експерта, але «це не змінює того факту, що Сікнік загинув під час виконання службових обов’язків, мужньо захищаючи Конгрес і Капітолій».
