У масовій паніці, що виникла на фестивалі, загинуло щонайменше 15 людей, десятки отримали травми, повідомляє інформагентство AFP.
Десятки мільйонів віруючих, які прибули на шеститижневий індуїстський фестиваль, збиралися купатися у Праджаграді біля злиття трьох священних річок — Гангу, Джамуни та Сарасваті — коли серед людей з незрозумілих причин виникла масова паніка.
Для наведення порядку влада направила спецпідрозділ швидкого реагування. На відео та фото, зроблених після розгону натовпу, видно, як тіла виносять на ношах.
Прем’єр-міністр Індії Нарендра Моді висловив співчуття сім’ям загиблих. Після інциденту Моді поспілкувався з губернатором штату Уттар-Прадеш Джогі Адіджанатхом і «дав інструкції щодо нормалізації ситуації», повідомляє індійське інформаційне агентство ANI.
Адіджанатх на платформі X закликав віруючих співпрацювати з владою і не намагатися дістатися до місця злиття трьох річок, а натомість провести обряд на найближчому березі річки.
Індуїстський фестиваль, найбільший масовий захід у світі, щодня збирає безліч людей. Загальна кількість учасників двотижневого заходу до вівторка становила близько двохсот мільйонів осіб. В середу до локації в Праяградзі з’їхалася рекордна кількість – сто мільйонів людей – для участі у купанні, адже вважається, що цей день – найсприятливіший за останні 144 роки через рідкісне розташування планет.
Влада зробила низку підготовчих заходів безпеки, щоб упоратися з величезним натовпом, зокрема, збільшила кількість медичного персоналу, а також запустила спеціальні потяги та автобуси.
Нещасні випадки, спричинені масовою панікою, часто трапляються на головних релігійних святах Індії. Зокрема у 2013 році під час паломництва Maha Kumbh mela загинуло 36 людей.

Мікроавтобус упав у кювет на світанку в п’ятницю в провінції Сінд на південному сході Пакистану. Загинуло щонайменше 20 людей, в основному жінки та діти. Ще 14 осіб зазнали травм, зокрема двоє перебувають у критичному стані.
Автобус перевозив паломників до суфійського храму в провінції, більшість жертв – діти від 2 до 8 років, які, ймовірно, сиділи на колінах у батьків.
Дорога, де сталася аварія, була пошкоджена повенями, і влада ще не завершила там відновлювальні роботи.
Пакистан досі не оговтався від повеней, викликаних надзвичайно сильними мусонними дощами, які почалися в середині червня. Унаслідок стихії загинуло понад 1700 людей, а загалом постраждали 33 мільйони громадян. Вода пошкодила багато доріг і мостів, найсильніші повені були в провінції Сінд.
За даними влади Пакистану, повені завдали матеріальних збитків на суму близько 30 мільярдів доларів.

Судно, яке перевозило паломників, потонуло в середу на річці Чамбал у Центральній Індії, повідомляє ABC News.
Прессекретар служби з надзвичайних ситуацій повідомив виданню, що 22 людей урятували, 7 тіл підняли з води, тривають пошуки ще 10 осіб. Причини інциденту з’ясовують правоохоронні органи.
Видання нагадує, що подібні аварії часто трапляються в Індії, оскільки переповнені судна не мають належного обладнання для безпеки. У вересні минулого року 12 людей потонули, коли екскурсійний човен перекинувся на річці Годаварі в штаті Андхра-Прадеш, а в травні 2018-го в аналогічній аварії в тому ж штаті загинуло 30 осіб.
