Керівник оперативної слідчої групи Вірендер Джадав розповів про притягнення до відповідальності кількох осіб за торгівлю в інтернеті обладнанням для абортів.
Представники органу охорони здоров’я штату також заявили, що поспілкувалися з понад 62 тисячами вагітних жінок, які вже мають дочок, аби переконати їх не проходити дослідження на визначення статі плоду.
За останні десятиліття співвідношення статей у Хар’яні різко змінилося. Чоловіків стало значно більше, адже сім’ї традиційно віддають перевагу народженню хлопчиків і часто, якщо під час вагітності виявляється, що плід – дівчинка, жінки роблять аборт.
У Хар’яні функціонують близько 1500 клінік для проведення абортів. Водночас у кількох регіонах досі поширені нелегальні переривання вагітності. Штат намагається стримати негативні тенденції, обіцяючи акушерську та психологічну підтримку вагітним жінкам, які збираються позбутися плоду жіночої статі. Влада, зокрема, створила робочу групу для вирішення цього питання. Крім того, до парламенту внесли пропозицію, яка передбачає грошову винагороду в розмірі 1000 рупій (близько 12 доларів) кожній матері, яка народить дівчинку.
