Лондонський суд відмовив у екстрадиції США засновника WikiLeaks Джуліана Ассанжа.
Суддя постановила, що Ассанж не може бути законно екстрадований до США для висунення звинувачень щодо WikiLeaks через його психічне здоров’я та ризик вчинення самогубства.
За словами судді, її «загальне враження» про Ассанжа – це «депресивний і зневірений чоловік, який справді боїться свого майбутнього».
Вона зазначила, що засновник WikiLeaks має рецидивуючий депресивний розлад. Зокрема у 2019 році у його камері було знайдено лезо бритви.
Очікується, що Ассанж буде залишатися у в’язниці на час, необхідний для подачі апеляції прокуратурою США.
Захист Ассанжа буде вимагати його звільнення під заставу.
Опубліковані Ассанжем на платформі WikiLeaks документи були надані колишнім аналітиком розвідки США Челсі Манінгом. У травні 2019 року Ассанж був ув’язнений на 50 тижнів за порушення умов виходу під заставу, коли він втік до посольства Еквадору в Лондоні, де потім переховувався майже сім років.
Він був заарештований 11 квітня минулого року британською поліцією, позаяк влада Еквадору скасувала рішення щодо надання Ассанжу громадянства країни.
Йому висунуто 18 обвинувачень, включаючи змову з метою злому урядових комп’ютерів і порушення закону про шпигунство.
У Сполучених Штатах Ассанжу загрожує до 175 років в’язниці за обвинуваченням у шпигунстві.
Ассанж, який наразі перебуває у в’язниці суворого режиму в східному Лондоні, а також його прибічники заявляють, що документи, які просочилися, розкривають правопорушення військових США і що Ассанж діяв як журналіст, а не шпигун.
Серед файлів, опублікованих WikiLeaks у 2010 році, було відео про атаку вертольота Apache 2007 року американськими військами в Багдаді, в результаті якого загинули 11 осіб, включаючи двох журналістів Reuters.
