A szerencsétlenség nem egészen négy nappal az után történt, hogy egy másik hajó hajótörést szenvedett az ország északkeleti részén, és a balesetben huszonöten meghaltak. A pénteki hajótörés után eddig húsz embert mentettek ki.
A komp konvojban úszott más hajókkal Kongó északkeleti részén, az utasok többsége karácsonyra hazautazó kereskedő volt – mondta el Joseph Kangolingoli, a szerencsétlenség helyszíne előtti utolsó város, Ingende polgármestere. Legalább 78 ember megfulladt, amikor csütörtökön felborult egy több száz utast szállító hajó a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság keleti részén fekvő Kivu-tóban – közölte egy tartományi kormányzó.
A rokonok zokogtak a parton, miközben az áldozatokat hullazsákokba tették és elszállították – mondta aReuters nek egy szemtanú, és az interneten megosztott videofelvételek azt mutatták, ahogy a többszintes, zsúfolt hajó oldalra dől a nyugodt vízben, mielőtt felborult, és a tóba dobta a csapkodó utasokat.
Nem világos, hogy hány ember tűnt el, a regionális tisztviselők eltérő halálos áldozatokról számoltak be.
Dél-Kivu tartomány kormányzója szerint a halálos áldozatok száma 78, és 278-an voltak a fedélzeten.
„Legalább három napba telik, mire pontos számokat kapunk, mert még nem találták meg az összes holttestet” – mondta Jean Jacques Purisi kormányzó.
A szomszédos Észak-Kivu tartomány kormányzója viszont azt mondta, hogy 58 ember élte túl a balesetet, és hogy eddig 28 ember halálát erősítették meg hivatalosan. A hajó a kikötőtől mintegy 700 méterre borult fel, a baleset okait vizsgálják – írta közleményében.
A kongói vizeken gyakoriak a halálos kimenetelű hajóbalesetek, mivel a hajók gyakran a kapacitásukat meghaladó mértékben vannak terhelve. Egy helyi kórházban az egyik túlélő elmondta, hogy nyugodt volt a helyzet, amikor a zsúfolt hajó felborult. Miközben körülötte mások megfulladtak, ő a víz felett küzdött, amíg a kongói csapatok ki nem mentették.
„Láttam, ahogy az emberek elsüllyednek, sokan elmerültek. Láttam, hogy nők és gyerekek süllyednek a vízbe, és én magam is a fulladás szélén álltam, de Isten megsegített” – mondta az 51 éves Alfani Buroko Byamungu a kórházi ágyáról.
Tömegek gyűltek össze a gomai kikötőben, ahol a hajónak ki kellett volna kötnie. Több száz ember életét vasztette a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság fővárosában a pusztító áradás miatt. A Kongó folyó elöntötte Kinshasát és környékét, több száz ház vált lakhatatlanná.
A Kongó folyó vízállása az elmúlt hat évtized legmagasabb szintjét érte el, a víz elöntötte a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság fővárosát, Kinshasát, ahol az utak egy része járhatatlanná vált a hömpölygő víz miatt. Egy közeli város, Kisangani polgármester elmondta, több mint 200 ház került víz alá.
A helyi tisztviselők szerint az elmúlt hónapokban több mint 300 ember halt meg az áradásokban.
Kinshasa szegénynegyedének lakói a BBC-nek úgy nyilatkoztak, a víz elöntötte az iskolákat, a kórházakat és a templomokat is.
„Itt éltem a rokonaimnál, most mindent elvesztettem” – mondta egy helyi nő. Egy másik lakos arról számolt be, hogy háza plafonig megtelt vízzel.
A Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság vízi útjait felügyelő hajózási ügynökség már december végén megkongatta a vészharangot, és arra figyelmeztetett, hogy a heves esőzések „rendkívüli áradásokat” okoznak majd a főváros környékén.
A heves esőzések miatt tavaly május óta pusztítanak áradások a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban, a természeti katasztrófa miatt több ezer ember tűnt el.
Kinshasában ugyan gyakoriak az áradások, de idén a Kongó folyó szokatlanul sokat, 6,26 métert emelkedett, amire utoljára az 1961-es rekordáradás idején volt példa.

Legkevesebb száz ember halálát okozták az elmúlt két hét esőzései és áradásai a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban – közölték a helyi hatóságok pénteken.
A december 11-i rendkívüli esőzések és áradások Dél-Kivu székhelyét Bukavut és térségét sújtották leginkább, a levonuló ár hidakat és házakat mosott el, jelentős kárt tett az infrastruktúrában, legkevesebb 15 ember meghalt. Az özönvízszerű esőzések következtében december 26-ról 27-re további 21 ember vesztette életét a bukavui régióban.
Zénon Karumba, Bukavu polgármestere a helyi sajtónak elmondta, hogy a halálos katasztrófák hátterében elsősorban az engedély nélküli ellenőrizetlen építkezések állnak.
A Bukavutól 120 kilométerre fekvő Mwenga térségében az áradások, valamint a föld- és lejtőcsuszamlások 42 ember halálát okozták.
Áradásokról szóló beszámolók érkeztek az afrikai ország középső részén fekvő Kaszai térségéből is, ahol a medréből kilépő folyók 22 ember halálát okozták Kanangában, a fővárosban. A megáradt folyók – helyi jelentések szerint – jelentős anyagi kárt okoztak a mintegy 1,5 millió lakosú régióban.

A tájékoztatás szerint a baleset pénteken történt a Kongó-folyón.
Taylor Nganzi kormányzó-helyettes a szerencsétlenség helyszínén készített videófelvételen komoly helyzetről beszélt és kijelentette, hogy a felelősöket meg fogják találni.
A hajó Mbandaka kikötőjéből indult a több mint 300 kilométerre található Bolombába. Szemtanúk beszámolói szerint túlzsúfolt volt és ezért borulhatott fel.
Az utasok pontos száma egyelőre nem ismert.
A Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban gyakoriak a folyami balesetek, különösen a Kongón. A szerencsétlenségek legfőbb oka a hajók rossz műszaki állapota, illetve túlzsúfoltságuk szokott lenni.

Legkevesebb huszonegy ember meghalt egy földcsuszamlás következtében a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság keleti felében – közölte hétfőn Észak-Kivu tartomány kormányzata.
A szerencsétlenség vasárnap egy völgybeli folyóparton történt, Bulwa település határában. Anyák gyermekeikkel együtt tartózkodtak ott, hogy ruhát mossanak a folyóban, amikor a heves esők következtében meglazult földtömeg elsodorta őket. Eddig nyolc nő és tizenhárom gyerek holtteste került elő a hordalék alól. Több embert továbbra is eltűntként tartanak nyilván.
Helyi tisztségviselők szerint egy ember túlélte a katasztrófát, őt kórházban ápolják. Mindemelett félő, hogy további holttestek vannak még a sártömeg alatt.
Észak-Kivu tartomány kormányzójának szóvivője szerint a mentési munka kedden is folytatódik.

Három észak-kongói faluból 22 embert, köztük gyerekeket rabolt el egy fegyveres csoport – számolt be az Origo az AP News-ra hivatkozva.
Hét fegyveres, fehér katonai egyenruhába öltözött férfi támadta meg kedden a három észak-kongói falut.
A közép-afrikai országot évtizedek óta erőszak sújtja, főként keleten, ahol mintegy 120 fegyveres csoport harcol a hatalomért, befolyásért, természeti erőforrásokért vagy a saját közösségük védelméért.
A legutóbbi emberrablásokért senki sem vállalta a felelősséget, de a régió egykor egy ugandai lázadócsoportnak volt a fellegvára, amelyet a kontinens egyik leghírhedtebb szökevénye, Joseph Kony vezetett.
Bár a csoport ma már csak nagyon kevés támadást hajt végre, az incidens rávilágít arra, hogy a nem megfelelő biztonsági intézkedések teszik lehetővé, hogy ezek a csoportok fennmaradjanak.
„Ez a legutóbbi emberrablási támadás nem azt jelenti, hogy egy új lázadói offenzíva van kilátásban, hanem azt, hogy (Kongó) képtelen megvédeni polgárait a különböző fegyveres csoportok által elkövetett bűncselekményektől” – nyilatkozta az egyik helyi kockázatelemző cég munkatársa.
Az emberrablást követően a közösségek felszólították a kormányt, hogy fokozza a biztonsági intézkedéseket.

Ismét ENSZ-konvojt ért támadás a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban, a kedd esti összetűzésben három támadó meghalt – jelentette be a világszervezet helyi missziója (Monusco).
Az ENSZ járművei Kiwanja városba szállítottak élelmiszert, majd visszafelé tartottak székhelyükre, Gomába, amikor a támadás érte őket. A konvojt nemzetközi békefenntartók és kongói kormányerők is kísérték.
A támadók a közlemény szerint úttorlaszt emeltek Gomától északra, tüzet nyitottak a négy teherautóra, és megpróbálták megszerezni azok rakományát is. Az ENSZ-erők és a kongói katonák igyekeztek megvédeni a konvojt, és eközben vesztette életét három támadó.
A támadás tényét megerősítette Patrick Iduma, a térség ellenőrzéséért felelős kongói hatóság vezetője is. Az ENSZ és a kongói hatóságok vizsgálatot indítottak, hogy pontosan fel tudják idézni a lezajlott eseményeket.
Az ENSZ-békefenntartók ellen az elmúlt hónapokban számos alkalommal tüntettek elkeseredett helyiek, akik a világszervezet katonáit hibáztatják azért, mert a térségben nem sikerült megfékezni a fegyveres csoportok gerjesztette erőszakot. A tiltakozó akciók is többször erőszakba fulladtak, hivatalos közlések szerint halálos áldozataik is voltak.
