Szemtanúk arról számoltak be, hogy az emberek kedden este a fákon kerestek menedéket, miután a víz elöntötte a szálláshelyeket.
A múlt hónap óta összesen legalább 179 ember halt meg Kenyában a heves esőzések és áradások következtében. A kormány adatai szerint több mint 190 ezren kényszerültek elhagyni otthonukat.
Alfred Mutua, a turisztikai és vadvédelmi minisztérium államtitkára sürgette a nemzeti parkok folyók mentén található hotelek és kempingek vezetését, hogy dolgozzanak ki kimenekítési terveket árvíz esetére.

A kenyai rendőrség szerint legalább negyven ember halt meg az ország nyugati részén Mai Mahiu területén hétfőn reggel, miután leomlott az Old Kijabe-gát. Az árvíz házakon söpört végig, és elvágott egy főutat – mondta Stephen Kirui rendőrtiszt az Associated Pressnek, amiről az ABC News számolt be.

Tanzánia miniszterelnöke, Kassim Majaliwa elmondta, hogy az El Nino által okozott heves esőzések erős széllel, árvizekkel és földcsuszamlásokkal sújtották Tanzániát, ami már több mint száz ember életét követelte és jelentős károkat okozott az országban. Kenyát is érintette az árvíz, ahol legkevesebb 32 ember halt meg villámárvíz következtében.
Több mint száz ember vesztette életét és több mint kétszázan megsérültek a tanzániai áradásokban – közölte csütörtökön Kassim Majaliwa, az ország miniszterelnöke. Több mint 10 000 ház sérült meg, és több mint 200 000 embert érintett, mondta a miniszterelnök a tanzániai parlamentben a fővárosban, Dodomában.
Kassim Majaliwa hozzátette, hogy „a heves El Nino esőzések, amelyeket erős szél, valamint áradások és földcsuszamlások kísértek az ország különböző részein, jelentős károkat okoztak”. „Ezek közé tartoznak a halálesetek, a terméskárok, az épületekben és lakóházakban, az infrastruktúrában – például az utakban, hidakban és vasutakban – keletkezett károk” – mondta Majaliwa a CNN szerint.
A miniszterelnök csütörtöki bejelentése szerint az áradásoknak 155 halálos áldozata és legalább 236 sérültje van.
Az árvíz Kenyát is érintette, amely Kelet-Afrikában Tanzániával közös határon fekszik. Keddig legalább 32 ember halt meg az áradások következtében Kenyában az ENSZ Humanitárius Ügyek Koordinációs Hivatala (OCHR) szerint. Kenyában március közepe óta heves esőzéseket regisztráltak, de a felhőszakadások az elmúlt héten fokozódtak, ami tömeges áradásokhoz vezetett, amelyek mintegy 103 500 embert érintettek.
A kenyai Vöröskereszt szerint a márciusi áradás kezdete óta több mint 188 mentést hajtottak végre. A kenyai főváros, Nairobi egyes útjait szerdán lezárták, és több városrész víz alatt maradt az újabb heves esőzések után. A Kenya Railways országszerte felfüggesztette az ingázó vonatok közlekedését.

A kenyai hatóságok betiltottak pénteken öt olyan vallási csoportot, amelyeket azzal vádolnak, hogy összesen több mint négyszáz hívük éhhalálát okozták – írja az MTI.
A kenyai kormány közleménye szerint a Jó remény nemzetközi egyháza (Good News International Church) nevű vallási közösség vezetője, Paul Nthenge Mackenzie azt hitette el követőivel, hogy ha halálig tartóan koplalnak, akkor találkozni fognak Jézussal.
A szekta akkor keltett országos megdöbbenést Kenyában, amikor áprilisban az ország északi részén fekvő Malindi városhoz közeli erdőben rátaláltak a közösség 98 tagjának holttestére.
Mackenzie-t letartóztatták, majd terrorizmus gyanújával fogták perbe.
A szekta működési engedélyét május 19-én bevonták, közben azonban az erdőben megtalált holttestek száma 425-re nőtt; s noha az áldozatok jó része valóban éhen halt, a boncolási eredmények szerint több száz embert megfojtottak vagy halálra vertek.
A hatóságok további négy kisegyházat, köztük a Mackenzie-hez közel álló ismert televíziós prédikátor, Ezekiel Odero vezette Új élet egyház és imaközösség (New Life Prayer Centre and Church) nevű szervezetet is betiltották. Oderót áprilisban letartóztatták és tömeggyilkosság, öngyilkosság elősegítése, valamint a hívei radikalizálása és pénzmosás gyanújával emeltek ellene vádat.
A nyomozás később kiderítette ugyan, hogy a két szekta tevékenysége összeköthető, de Oderót májusban óvadék ellenében szabadon engedték, miközben Mackenzie előzetes letartóztatását további 47 nappal meghosszabbították.
A kenyai kormány adatai szerint a zömében keresztények lakta, 53 milliós népességű országban körülbelül négyezer „egyház” működik, beleértve olyan közösségeket is, amelyeknek vezetői semmiféle teológiai végzettséggel nem rendelkeznek, és tevékenységük sokszor csak a híveket adakozásra ösztönző kizsákmányolásban merül ki.
Az ország kormányai több ízben tettek kísérletet a szekták visszaszorítására, de rendre kudarcot vallottak, mert a jelentős társadalmi támogatottságot élvező szervezetek ragaszkodnak az állam és az egyház szétválasztásán nyugvó alkotmányos jogaikhoz.
