A tiltakozók attól tartanak, hogy a víz súlyosan károsítja a tengeri élővilágot.
Helyszíni beszámolók szerint az emberek „Nukleáris energia? Köszönjük, nem!”, illetve „Védjük meg a Csendes-óceánt!” feliratú táblákkal vonultak, a sajtónak nyilatkozó egyik aktivista pedig azt mondta, a radioaktív anyagok előbb-utóbb nyomot hagynak a tengeri ökoszisztémán.

A tokiói terv ellen Japánban is sokan tiltakoznak, főként a halászok, akik attól tartanak, hogy a lakosság félelmei miatt nem fogják tudni eladni a kifogott halakat.
A kínai kormány szintén több alkalommal tiltakozott Tokiónál az ügyben, és egyebek között elhamarkodottnak nevezte a NAÜ értékelését.
A tisztított víz óceánba engedése várhatóan szóba kerül Joe Biden amerikai, Jun Szogjol dél-koreai elnök és Kisida Fumio japán miniszterelnök jövő heti találkozóján is.
Az atomerőmű katasztrófáját 2011. március 11-én földrengés és az azt követő szökőár okozta. A tönkrement reaktorok hűtéséhez azóta is vízre van szükség. A szennyezett víz tárolása azonban jó ideje problémát jelent, ezért tervezik a kezelt hűtővíz Csendes-óceánba engedését.
