Kalózok támadtak meg és kerítettek hatalmukba egy kereskedelmi hajót Szomália partjainál – közölte csütörtökön a brit tengeri kereskedelmi hivatal (UKMTO) és az Ambrey nevű, hajózási biztonsággal foglalkozó brit magáncég.
A tájékoztatás szerint mintegy hat fegyveres szállt fel a Libériában regisztrált teherhajó fedélzetére 850 kilométerre keletre a szomáliai Ejl városától.
A legénység a hajó gyomrában sáncolta el magát.
A teherhajó a bahreini Halífa bin Szalmán kikötőjébe tartott. A támadásról nem tudni további részleteket.
Szomália partvidéke néhány éve még a kalózok fellegvárának számított. A 2008-ban indult uniós, Atalanta fedőnevű, kalózok elleni műveletnek köszönhetően azonban jelentősen sikerült visszaszorítani a tengeri rablók tevékenységét. Legutóbb azonban december 14-én jelentettek kalóztámadást a térségből, aminek során elfoglaltak egy hajót és Szomália felé térítették el.

Mohamud Moallin Abdulle a szomáliai Katasztrófaigazgatási Ügynökség (SODMA) elnöke elmondta, hogy különösen Hiraan, Bakol, Bay és Gedo térségeire volt erős hatással esőzés és az árvíz.
Abdulle bejelentette, hogy a sűrű esőzések és árvizek miatt életét vesztettek száma 96-ra nőtt, az árvíz negatívan hatott 2 millió személyre és 700 ezer személy kénytelen volt elhagyni otthonát.
A naggyobb állatokra is negatívan hatással volt az árvíz, több szántóföld elpusztult.

Egy öngyilkos merénylő legkevesebb 13 katonát megölt, további húszat pedig megsebesített hétfőn a szomáliai főváros, Mogadishu egyik katonai akadémiáján – közölte a mogadishui katonai kórház egyik alkalmazottja. A támadás elkövetőjeként az al-Shabaab iszlamista terrorszervezet jelentkezett.
A katonák éppen felsorakoztak létszámellenőrzésre, amikor az öngyilkos merénylő felrobbantotta magát – közölte a hadsereg egyik tisztje. Hozzátette: az áldozatok Alsó-Shabelle régióból érkeztek kiképzésre a fővárosba.
A merénylet áldozatainak és sebesültjeinek száma nem végleges – közölte a mogadishui katonai kórház idézett alkalmazottja.
Az Al Shabaab közleményben közölte, hogy a merénylő 73 katonát ölt meg, 124 másikat pedig megsebesített. Áldozataik számát illetően viszont a csoport jellemzően jóval magasabb számokat közöl a hivatalosan bejelentett adatoknál.

Noha a kormányerők és a velük szövetséges milíciák offenzívája kiszorította az iszlamista lázadókat a déli területek nagy részéről, a fegyveresek folytatják a támadásokat.
Május végén legkevesebb 54 ugandai békefenntartót öltek meg egy Mogadishutól délre lévő katonai támaszponton, míg Baidoát, az ország egyik legnagyobb városát csaknem két hétig ostromolták. Ebben a hónapban pedig további támadások sorát hajtottak végre Mogadishuban.

A terroristák robbanószerrel megrakott járműveket robbantottak fel az ország déli részén található Baardhere városának közös szomáliai–etiópiai kiképzőtábora előtt.
A halottak közül minimum heten civilek – közölte Mohammed Yusuf helyi polgármester. Hozzátette, hogy legalább húszan megsebesültek a merényletben, de a mentősök még kutatnak további áldozatok után a törmelék alatt.
