A tűzoltóság közösségi médiafelületén bemutatott fotókon látható, hogy a busz részben elmerült a híd alatt folyó patak vizében, és néhány halálos áldozat is van a közelében. Guatemalaváros polgármestere, Ricardo Quinonez a közösségi médiában bejelentette, hogy a mentést megkezdték, a rendőrség pedig a forgalmi dugók elkerülése érdekében alternatív útvonalakat fog kijelölni az arra közlekedők számára.
A közép-amerikai ország elnöke, Bernardo Arevalo részvétét fejezte ki az áldozatok családtagjainak, és háromnapos nemzeti gyászt rendelt el, a katasztrófavédelmi erőkön kívül pedig a hadsereget is arra kérte, hogy nyújtson segítséget a szerencsétlenségben érintett embereknek.

Több jármű összeütközött szombat este egy főútvonalon Guatemala nyugati részében, a balesetben tizenegyen meghaltak, köztük kilenc kubai állampolgár – jelentette be San Juan Bautista város ügyészi hivatala.
A baleset 120 kilométerre Guatemalavárostól történt, egy teherautó, egy kisteherautó és egy motorkerékpár ütközött össze.
Az ügyészi hivatal szerint kilencen a helyszínen meghaltak, három sérültet kórházba szállítottak, de később közülük is elhunytak ketten.
A halálos áldozatok között a kubaiak mellett két guatemalai állampolgár van. A hatóságok szerint a kubaiak az Egyesült Államokba tartó bevándorlók voltak, ők utaztak a kisteherautón. Sofőrjük guatemalai volt, akárcsak a motorral közlekedő férfi.

Október eleje óta naponta tízezrek vonulnak az utcára, és a főügyészi hivatal vezetőjének és több magas rangú tisztségviselőjének lemondását követelik, amiért megpróbálták aláásni Arévalo választási győzelmét.
Hétfőn mintegy 50 felfegyverzett ember megpróbált feloszlatni egy tüntetést a nyugat-guatemalai Malacatán városában.
A kormány közleménye szerint 11 embert őrizetbe vettek a zavargásban játszott szerepük miatt.
A tüntetőket megtámadta egy fegyveres csoport. Négy sérültet láttunk el, egy személy pedig meghalt a helyszínen, mindenkire fegyverrel támadtak – számolt be Diego Calderón, aki egy helyi segélyszervezet munkatársa.
„Követeljük, hogy a hatóságok szavatolják a békésen tüntetők biztonságát” – írta a megválasztott elnök.
Arévalo már október elején kijelentette, hogy országának kormánya erőszakkal lép fel a tüntetések ellen, és szándékosan kelt feszültséget, mert ez ürügyként szolgálhat rendkívüli jogrend kihirdetésére. A megválasztott elnök leszögezte, hogy mindenképpen elfoglalja tisztségét január 14-én.
Az Amerikai Államok Szervezete (OAS) közleményében törvénytelennek nevezte a bírósági döntést, amely felfüggesztette Arévalo pártját, és az ügyben felszólalt António Guterres ENSZ-főtitkár is, óva intve bármilyen, az elnökválasztás eredményének aláásására tett kísérlettől.

Több mint ezer embert evakuáltak és egy utat lezártak csütörtökön Guatemalában, miután reggel kitört a főváros közelében fekvő Fuego vulkán, Közép-Amerika legaktívabb vulkánja – közölték a guatemalai hatóságok.
A helyi katasztrófavédelmi hivatal arra figyelmeztetett, hogy a vulkán oldalán rendívül forró gáz, víz és törmelék keveréke ömlik lefelé.
A közelben lévő 350 falu lakóit evakuálták, de a vulkánkitörés akár 130 ezer ember lakóhelyét is érintheti.
A katasztrófavédelem szóvivője elmondta, hogy eddig mintegy 7600 embert befogadó, 13 átmeneti óvóhelyet állítottak fel.
Információk szerint a vulkánból hatezer méter magas hamuoszlop lövellt ki, a hamufelhő hét közeli falura hullott.
A 3763 méter magas Fuego vulkán 40 kilométerre délnyugatra található a fővárostól. A 2022 decemberében történt legutóbbi kitörés miatt akkor lezárták Guatemala nemzetközi repülőterét és egy forgalmas utat is.
Ezt az utat csütörtök délután biztonsági okokból a hatóságok ismét lezárták.
A guatemalai vulkanológiai intézet főigazgatója csütörtök este már arról tájékoztatott, hogy a vulkán aktivitása csökkent.
A Fuego 2018-as kitörésének 215 halálos áldozata volt, és több mint kétszázan eltűntek a katasztrófában.

Korrupció és csalás miatt 16 év börtönbüntetésre ítélte a bíróság Otto Pérezt, Guatemala volt elnökét, aki 2012 és 2015 között volt államfő.
A volt politikust és nyugalmazott tábornokot bűnszervezetben való részvételben és vámcsalásban való bűnrészességben találta bűnösnek a legsúlyosabb ügyek tárgyalására felállított különbíróság. Mindkét vádpontban 8-8 év börtönt szabtak ki rá, és nem is szabadulhat korábban. Emellett egymillió dollárt is fizetnie kell büntetésként.
Pérez korábbi alelnökére, Roxana Baldettire ugyanekkora büntetést mért az igazságszolgáltatás. A törvénytelen vagyongyarapodás vádja alól azonban mindkettejüket felmentették.
A bíróságnak nincs kétsége afelől, hogy a törvénytelen vagyongyarapodás bűncselekménye is megvalósult – szögezte le Karry Sarceno bíró, világossá téve azonban, hogy ezt az ügyészségnek nem sikerült kellőképpen bizonyítania.
A 72 éves Pérez az ítélethirdetés előtt azt mondta, hogy bízik és hisz abban, hogy felmentik. „Elkeseredett vagyok és csalódott” – mondta a rá kimért büntetés bejelentése után, és közölte, hogy fellebbez.
A nyomozati adatok szerint a bűncselekmény során 3,5 millió dollár kenőpénz került illetéktelen helyre, a csalásokkal pedig 10 millió dollárral károsították meg az államkasszát. Pérez 2015 szeptemberében mondott le, amikor a Guatemalában elkövetett bűncselekményeket feltárni hivatott ENSZ-bizottság nyilvánosságra hozta jelentését a történtekről. Még aznap le is tartóztatták.

A guatemalai hatóságok több mint 1200 ősi maja műtárgyat találtak egy amerikai pár házában. A házkutatásról csütörtökön kiadott közlemény szerint a párt néhány nappal korábban vették őrizetbe lopott történelmi műtárgyak miatt, de azóta már szabadlábra helyezték őket.
A hatóságok szerdán találtak 722 különböző méterű és anyagú, továbbá 500 kisebb régészeti műtárgyat Allison Jolluck és Giorgio Salvidor Rossilli Antigua Guatemalában lévő házában. A házkutatást a guatemalai kulturális örökség elleni bűncselekmények felderítésének ügyében folytatott nyomozás eredményeként rendelték el.
Az amerikai pár házában dokumentumokat, könyveket, egy laptopot, számítógépes lemezeket, két mobiltelefont, és egy kitömött quetzált, Guatemala nemzeti szimbólumának számító madarat is lefoglaltak a hatóságok.
A rajtaütéskor a pár nem volt otthon. Kedden engedték ki őket az előzetes letartóztatásból egyenként 50 ezer quetzal (6400 dollár) óvadék fejében. Hétfőn azért vették őket őrizetbe, mert autójukban 166 ősi műtárgyat szállítottak.
A guatemalai ügyészség szerint a pár megúszhatja a büntetőeljárást, mert amerikai állampolgárok. Múlt héten a hatóságok megakadályozták, hogy Jolluck elhagyja Guatemalát két ősi műtárggyal.
Az ügyészi hivatal szóvivője lemondta, hogy a pár lakásán talált bizonyítékok lefoglalásával fontos lépést tettek az eljárás elindítása felé. Az ügyészségnek három hónap áll rendelkezésére a nyomozáshoz.
A lefoglalt műtárgyakat a kulturális minisztériumban helyezték biztonságba.

Az elnöki szóvivő tudatta, hogy Alejandro Giammattei és csapata az ország északnyugati részén lévő Huehuetenangóba tartott, ám a támadás időpontjában az államfő helikopteren utazott.
Katonai források szerint a támadók között egy mexikói állampolgár is van, akit azzal gyanúsítanak, hogy kapcsolatban áll a Jalisco Nueva nevű mexikói kábítószerbandával.
