Az ellenzék szerint ez a véres megtorlás válasz volt a tömeges tiltakozásokra, amelyek az egész országban kitörtek a botrányos elnökválasztás után, ahol a hivatalban lévő elnök, Samia Suluhu Hassan valódi ellenfelek nélkül nyert.
A Chadema pártnak megtiltották, hogy részt vegyen a múlt héten tartott parlamenti és elnökválasztáson. A párt vezetőjét, Tundu Lissu-t hazaárulás vádjával őrizetbe vették, miután Hassan kormánya azzal vádolta, hogy meg akarta hiúsítani az október 29-i választásokat.
A fő ellenzéki párt szerdán a CNN-nek elmondta, hogy mintegy 2000 halálos áldozatot dokumentáltak a tüntetések leverése során.
A Chadema kommunikációs igazgatója, Brenda Rupia közölte, hogy a rendőrség nemcsak lelőtte a tüntetőket, hanem eltüntette a testüket, hogy elrejtse az erőszak valódi mértékét.
„Minden nappal újabb áldozatokat fedezünk fel és erősítünk meg különböző régiókban” – mondta Rupia.
A legborzalmasabb vád szerint a hatóságok megpróbálják eltitkolni a tragédia valódi méretét.
A legtöbb holttest még mindig a kórházakban van, és a rendőrség nem engedi, hogy a családok elvigyék őket… A rendőrség több mint 400 testet kidobott, és nem tudjuk, hová vitték őket
– tette hozzá.
A tanzániai kormány korábban „erősen eltúlzottnak” nevezte az ellenzék adatait, de nem közölt saját becslést az áldozatok számáról.

Kenyát is érintette az árvíz, ahol legkevesebb 32 ember halt meg villámárvíz következtében.
Több mint száz ember vesztette életét és több mint kétszázan megsérültek a tanzániai áradásokban – közölte csütörtökön Kassim Majaliwa, az ország miniszterelnöke. Több mint 10 000 ház sérült meg, és több mint 200 000 embert érintett, mondta a miniszterelnök a tanzániai parlamentben a fővárosban, Dodomában.
Kassim Majaliwa hozzátette, hogy „a heves El Nino esőzések, amelyeket erős szél, valamint áradások és földcsuszamlások kísértek az ország különböző részein, jelentős károkat okoztak”. „Ezek közé tartoznak a halálesetek, a terméskárok, az épületekben és lakóházakban, az infrastruktúrában – például az utakban, hidakban és vasutakban – keletkezett károk” – mondta Majaliwa a CNN szerint.
A miniszterelnök csütörtöki bejelentése szerint az áradásoknak 155 halálos áldozata és legalább 236 sérültje van.
Az árvíz Kenyát is érintette, amely Kelet-Afrikában Tanzániával közös határon fekszik. Keddig legalább 32 ember halt meg az áradások következtében Kenyában az ENSZ Humanitárius Ügyek Koordinációs Hivatala (OCHR) szerint. Kenyában március közepe óta heves esőzéseket regisztráltak, de a felhőszakadások az elmúlt héten fokozódtak, ami tömeges áradásokhoz vezetett, amelyek mintegy 103 500 embert érintettek.
A kenyai Vöröskereszt szerint a márciusi áradás kezdete óta több mint 188 mentést hajtottak végre. A kenyai főváros, Nairobi egyes útjait szerdán lezárták, és több városrész víz alatt maradt az újabb heves esőzések után. A Kenya Railways országszerte felfüggesztette az ingázó vonatok közlekedését.

A kormányfő szerint az El Nino időjárási jelenséghez köthető ítéletidő az ország több térségében súlyos anyagi károkat is okozott. Az áradások és földcsuszamlások következtében több mint 230 ember megsérült, és több mint 10 ezer lakóház megrongálódott. Április közepén a kelet-afrikai ország kormányszóvivője még 58 halálos áldozatról számolt be a heves esőzésekkel összefüggésben.
Kelet-Afrika több országában a megszokottnál jóval több csapadék hullott az utóbbi időben. Az esős évszak márciusi kezdete óta Kenyában legkevesebb 55 ember halt meg áradások miatt. Burundiban csaknem 100 ezer ember kényszerült elhagyni az otthonát a hónapok óta tartó, csaknem folyamatos esőzés miatt.
Idén az esős évszakhoz kapcsolódik az El Nino-jelenség is, amely 2023 közepén kezdődött, és legalább májusig tart még a Meteorológiai Világszervezet szerint. Az El Nino következtében a világ számos térségében emelkedik a hőmérséklet, szárazság alakul ki, vagy fokozódik a csapadékmennyiség.

Legkevesebb 47 ember életét vesztette és 85-en megsérültek Tanzánia északi részén heves esőzéseket követő földcsuszamlásokban – közölték a helyi hatóságok.
A Jambo TV helyi televízió beszámolója szerint Tanzánia negyedik legmagasabb hegyének, a 3420 méter magas Hanang lejtőjén történt a földcsuszamlás, amely házakat sodort el a fővárostól, Dodomától 300 kilométerre északra található Katesh városában a kora reggeli órákban.
A hatóságok tájékoztatása szerint heves esőzések sújtották szombaton a térséget, aminek következtében számos utcát járhatatlanná tett a víz, a sár és a kidőlt fák. A hatóságok attól tartanak, hogy a rendrakási munkálatok során további áldozatokat találhatnak. Samia Suluhu Hassan elnök segélyszállítmányok küldését rendelte el a térség rászorulóinak.
A tanzániai vöröskereszt a nagyjából 10 ezer lakosú városról videófelvételt tett közzé, amelyen sárlavinák által félig betemetett autókat és a házak törmeléke alól holmijukat menteni próbáló embereket lehetett látni.
Egy évtizedek óta nem tapasztalt aszályt követően Kelet-Afrika országai hetek óta özönvízszerű esőzésekkel és árvizekkel küzdenek az El Nino időjárási jelenség következtében. A régióban százak vesztették életüket az ítéletidő miatt.

Aretas Lyimo, a DCEA főkapitánya hangsúlyozta, hogy a kannabisztermelés burjánzik az ország egyes térségeiben, s a mostani művelet célja éppen az volt, hogy ennek tartós jelleggel gátat szabjanak.

Tizenkilenc ember vesztette életét a vasárnapi tanzániai repülőgép-szerencsétlenségben – jelentette be az ország miniszterelnöke, Kasszim Madzsaliva.
A Precision Air légitársaság ATR 42-500 típusú repülőgépe, amely a kelet-afrikai ország gazdasági fővárosából, Dar es Salaamból a Viktória-tó partján fekvő Bukoba városba tartott, közvetlenül a leszállás előtt, a repülőtértől mintegy 100 méterre csapódott Afrika legnagyobb tavának vizébe.
A repülőgépen 39 utas és négyfőnyi személyzet tartózkodott.
A csaknem teljesen víz alá került gép törzséből korábbi jelentések szerint 26 sérültet mentettek ki és szállítottak kórházba.
A katasztrófa pontos oka egyelőre nem ismert, a légügyi hatóságok szerint azonban a repülőgép esőben, rossz látási viszonyok közepette próbálta megtalálni a leszállópályát, amelyet elvétett.

Közvetlenül a leszállás előtt a Viktória-tóba zuhant Tanzániában, az északnyugati Bukoba városánál egy utasszállító repülőgép a rossz idő miatt – jelentette az AFP helyi rendőrségi forrásra hivatkozva.
Egyelőre nem tudni hivatalosan hányan repültek a gépen, folyik a mentés. Erről már megjelentek videók, ezek a part közelében mutatják a repülőgépet, amely kiemelkedik a vízből.
William Mwampaghale regionális rendőrparancsnok a bukobai repülőtéren újságíróknak azt mondta – számolt be az MTI -, hogy a Precision Air légitársaság egyik gépe a repülőtértől mintegy 100 méterre csapódott a vízbe.
A helyi média szerint a tanzániai gazdasági fővárosból, Dar es Salaamból a tóparti Bukoba városba tartó járaton mintegy 49 ember repült.
A Precision Air, amely az ország legnagyobb magán légitársasága, rövid közleményben erősítette meg a baleset hírét.
A mentőcsapatot a helyszínre küldték, és két órán belül további információkat közölnek – írták.
