A detonációban a jármű két utasa meghalt, és egy harmadik személy, egy határőr könnyebb sérüléseket szenvedett.
A kormányzó beszámolt arról, hogy a jármű eredetét egyelőre nem tudták megállapítani, de az első feltételezések szerint egy New York állambeli lakoshoz tartozik.
A robbanást térfigyelő kamerák is megörökítették, amelyek azt mutatják, hogy szerdán helyi idő szerint kevéssel fél 12 előtt történt a robbanás Niagara Falls település amerikai és kanadai oldalát elválasztó hídnál, a Rainbow Bridge-nél. Amerikai médiumoknak szemtanúk arról számoltak be, hogy a járművet a betontömb a levegőbe dobta és azt követően következett be a robbanás.
Az eset részleteit a Szövetségi Nyomozó Iroda (FBI) vizsgálja, amiről Joe Biden elnököt is tájékoztatták. A hatóságok először terrortámadásra gyanakodtak, különösen annak fényében, hogy az FBI igazgatója a közelmúltban egy kongresszusi meghallgatáson arról beszélt, hogy a közel-keleti konfliktus nyomán rég nem látott szintre növekedett egy Egyesült Államokban elkövetett terrortámadás kockázata.
Justine Trudeau kanadai miniszterelnök szerdán azt mondta, hogy az esetet nagyon komolyan veszik.

A fontos kereskedelmi csomópont lezárása öt napja tart, megbénítva az Egyesült Államok és Kanada közötti kereskedelmet. Ennek igyekeznek véget vetni a kanadai rendőrök.
Hozzákezdett az egyik legfontosabb kereskedelmi útvonalon található, Kanada és az Egyesült Államok között található hídon található, a koronavírus elleni védőoltások kötelezővé tételét ellenző tüntetők által létesített blokád felszámolásához a kanadai rendőrség, több mint 12 órával az ezt lehetővé tevő bírósági döntést követően – írja a Reuters.
Az Ambassador híd Észak-Amerika legforgalmasabb szárazföldi határátkelője, amit a tiltakozók ötödik napja tartanak lezárva szombaton, mintegy 15 kamion, autó és furgon segítségével, elzárva ezzel többek között a detroiti autógyárak ellátását.
A windsori rendőrség Twitteren a tüntetőket jogkövető, békés viselkedésre szólította fel és az utazókat az érintett területek kerülésére kérte. A rendőrség túljutott a tüntetők járművein, miközben szombat reggelre a pénteki mintegy 200 fős tüntetői létszám is lecsökkent. Kanadában a kormányzat szigorú járványkezelési intézkedései ellenében, melyek között az oltási kötelezettség is szerepel, már harmadik hete zajlanak a tüntetések.
A Szabadság Konvoj nevet viselő tüntetést Ottawában, az ország fővárosában kezdték meg olyan kanadai kamionosok, akik ellenzik az oltás- vagy karanténkötelezettséget a határon történő átkelések kapcsán. Azóta a tüntetők három határátkelőt lezártak, köztük az Ambassador hidat, megfojtva ezzel a két ország közötti kereskedelmet. Mindez Joe Biden figyelmét is felkeltette, aki csütörtökön felszólította a kanadai kormányt a lezárás felszámolására. Úgy tűnik Kanada eleget kíván tenni a kérésnek.
Az Egyesült Államok északi szomszédjánál egyébként a lakosság közel 80 százaléka túl van az oltásokon.
