José Andrés, a World Central Kitchen (WCK) nonprofit szervezet alapítója szerint Izrael „szisztematikusan, kocsiról kocsira” támadta segélyszervezetük munkatársait. Az állítások szerint hét emberük vesztette életét egy légicsapásban, miközben segélyeket osztottak a Gázai övezetben.
Andrés szerdán a Reuters hírügynökségnek adott videóinterjúban elmondta: a WCK összeköttetésben állt az izraeli hadsereggel, amely így pontosan nyomon tudta követni alkalmazottai mozgását.
Ez nem egy „balszerencsés helyzet volt azzal, hogy hoppá rossz helyre dobtuk a bombát” – húzta alá Andrés. „Még akkor is, ha nem hangoltunk volna össze az izraeli védelmi erőkkel, egyetlen demokratikus ország és egyetlen hadsereg sem támadhat civilekre és humanitárius dolgozókra” – tette hozzá.
A WCK a Ciprusról Gázába küldött segélyszállítmányok eljuttatásában és szétosztásában vett részt, amikor a szervezet konvoját támadás érte. Az izraeli hadsereg mély sajnálatát fejezte ki, Benjámin Netanjahu izraeli miniszterelnök pedig véletlennek nevezte a történteket. Az áldozatok között ausztrál, amerikai és brit állampolgárok is voltak.
Andrés elmondta: az incidens idején elvileg a Gázai övezetben kellett volna lennie, de különböző okok miatt nem tudott elmenni.
A spanyol-amerikai sztárséf, aki kedden beszélt Joe Biden amerikai elnökkel is, kijelentette, hogy az Egyesült Államoknak nyomást kell gyakorolnia Benjámin Netanjahu izraeli kormányfőre és többet kell tennie a gázai övezeti háború leállítása érdekében.
Biden nyilatkozatában felháborodását és mély fájdalmát fejezte ki a halálesetek miatt. Washington ugyanakkor Netanjahu álláspontjára helyezkedett azzal, hogy értékelésében nem szándékosnak nevezte a segélykonvojt ért csapásokat.
